Expensive divorces are passé in Hollywood and Richard Gere also seems to be heading the same way. The “Pretty Woman” star is fighting his wife Carrey Lowell who wants more than US$100 million [$127 million] from his estimated US$250 million fortune.
According to sources from Page Six, Lowell feels that she had given up on a career for their family. The former couple appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court and were cordial with each other. Their son Henry James Jigme Gere sat some distance from his parents. New York Postreports the custody battle involving their 15-year-old son has been amicably settled. Gere and Lowell are having differences regarding their lifestyle, with the “Chicago” star preferring mediation and privacy while Lowell wanting to socialize in Hollywood.
The “Officer and the Gentleman” star has been remarkably calm and collected during the proceedings. Sources from the publication said that he even flirted with a reporter, playfully asking her, “You want me to give you a special, intimate interview?” Gere has engaged the services of the top attorneys in Manhattan, Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan. He was accompanied by his attorneys and briefly chatted with Lowell before meeting the judge. Gere had to be called upon by Lowell as he did not hear the summons from the judge’s chambers. According to the Daily News, the closed door meeting with the judge lasted about 30 minutes and the parties declined to comment about the proceedings. Gere and Lowell left separately. Lowell was allowed to take photographs of the courthouse rotunda and murals even though photography is not allowed in the premises.
Richard Gere and Carey Lowell have been married for 11 years. Gere is known for his stellar roles in "Pretty Woman," "Chicago," "Arbitrage" and many more. Carrey Lowell is known for her role as the Bond girl in “Licence to Kill” and as Attorney Jamie Ross in the NBC series “Law & Order.”
